This dates back to my childhood and may be fiction based on intertwining of my memories and dreams at this stage in life.  As you may know, ranchers notch the ears of their cattle to be able to identify them at a distance.  My grandfather bred horses, rather than notch their ears he used this hand signal to identify himself to other cowboys on the range.
